In Italian cycling teams, the first thing that is said to a new rider is:
"You have to drink sea water".

Sea water brings two types of benefits to athletes:
It is the best way to replenish the salts lost through sweat (particularly important in long trials: cycling, marathon, etc.)
It's the fastest way to recover from exertion (and be better prepared for the next day's race or for a more intense workout)
In addition, sportsmen who drink it say they suffer less injuries.
Quinton laboratories have carried out a study on cyclists in which the benefits of sea water are confirmed (See the study here -in Spanish-)

All of them drink isotonic sea water or pure sea water (without diluting).
A personal trainer of Triathlon Ironman Manel de la Varga (65) from Barcelona explains on his website how sea water has improved his results.

In the Ironman Barcelona 2014, De la Varga was the winner of his category, aged 65 to 69. He did in 12 hours what young people did in 9 hours. (Its web site no longer offer the results).
He has researched to find the best drink to combat dehydration in endurance sports, before, during and after the sports test.
For that, he ran a distance of 21 km on several occasions and ways:
without drinking anything;
drinking only water from the sources he met along the way;
by taking sports drinks with electrolytes (in powder or in tablets to be dissolved with spring water found along the way);
by drinking isotonic sea water. He traveled with pure sea water and diluted it along the way with water from the sources he encountered, with the ratio 1: 3 or 1: 4.
The average run times he obtained were:
without drinking anything ........ 2h 29m
drinking only water ................... 2h 07m
drinking water with electrolytes..1h 57m
with isotonic sea water .............. 1h 53m.
If we compare the result obtained with sea water and that with quality water and electrolytes, the time saved is 4 minutes!
If the race is a marathon (42.2 km), the runner can improve his time by 8 minutes and also avoid injuries, cramps and improve recovery time (only if there is isotonic sea water in the refueling points for athletes who want it).

In Spain you can buy sea water at cheap price at any diet store and some supermarkets. There are 5 companies bottling and selling sea water because there is a lot of people drinking sea water on a daily basis.
